The Day We Brought You Home (July 18, 2006)

Dear Gus,

The day we brought you home was one of the happiest days that we have ever had. Mommy and Daddy had been married a little over a year, and they were looking for a special little one to add to their family. Mommy and Daddy had been arguing over what kind of puppy we should get, and Daddy won the argument. We looked all over the paper for puppies, and we found a nice lady not too far from us who had Golden puppies for sale. We knew we wanted a reddish puppy, because our friend Henry is red, and he was sooo pretty. We asked the lady, and she said the momma was a little bit red, but the daddy was VERY red, so we were excited. When we got to the farm, the lady showed us where the puppies were. Mommy was soooo excited to see all the little furballs!

Each of your brothers and sisters were a little bit different. The momma (Lily) and the daddy (Winchester) made VERY cute babies! The coloring on each of you was a little bit different. One of your brothers had a half-red half-blonde face! Another had a red mohawk down his nose! We had trouble deciding which puppy to take home.

We stood on the outside of the fence for a long time. We kept looking at all the puppies, trying to decide which one to bring home with us. Soon, the puppies sitting next to the fence got bored of waiting for us, and they went back to playing with each other, or eating their feet, or rolling around in the straw.

Except for one.

One little boy stayed sitting at the fence the whole time. He did not get up and play. He did not walk away from the fence. He stayed next to the fence, looking at us.

His face was smaller--not broad like his daddy's. His ears laid flat next to his head and were darker red. That little boy was you.

We went to the farm that day to choose a puppy, but in truth, you chose us. The lady at the farm said you were the calmest one. You would let her lay you on your back and rub your belly without biting. We knew you were the one.

We put your new collar on--the red one with "Gus" printed on it. Mommy picked out the name. You are named after one of her favorite TV show characters, Gus Pike. You shivered when you were in mommy's arms because you were so high up.

Your mommy walked us to the car, and barked "goodbye" as we drove away. You sat in my lap in the car.

Mommy and Daddy took you to meet Uncle Kent and Gunner. Even though you were scared in the car, you weren't scared of Gunner at all! You chased her around the yard, and Mommy and Daddy thought it was so funny that Gunner was so scared of you!

After you chased Gunner around for a little while, Uncle Kent took this picture of us--our new three-person family.

Finally, we took you home. It was a long day, and you fell asleep in your box bed right away. We covered it with a towel so it would be dark for you. You got up once at night, but Mommy took you out and then you went right back to sleep. You never peed in the house, you were such a good boy.

We are so glad we adopted you. Everyone talks about what a good boy you are. You are a little bit hyper, but you are a good dog and you know lots of tricks. Mommy always says, "I loved you first." It is true, little man.

Hi Gus,
That's a great story. You are a handsome dog. And oh yeah my mom has a big crush on Gus Pike--she just rented all of Avonlea from Netflix and watched it all. That is so cool about your name!

Thank you for visiting my blog. It will be great to be friends.

BTW, if you read my beginning story--I picked my mom out too--although it took one failed adoption before I got back to her!

Merry Christmas!

love & wags,

OMD! Momma's eyes are leaking from reading that bloggie. She said its because it was such a nice story and it made her remember Grandpa Angus and Beautiful Raja and Pee-wee and ME when we were just little babies. Thanks for sharing.

BARK! Mommy is leaking too. She never got to see Max and me as little pups. When her and daddy came to pick me, they knew they wanted a "fon", but I had to make sure. So I played uninterested, because the last 2 families had brought me back. I didnt want to go away and come back again. But mommy and daddy picked me anyway and I fell in love the 2nd month. I know I am at my forever home now. BARK! Sasha the Princess!
