Poor Gus

We were at a park here in Kettering, watching Nick play tennis. Gus went to sniff a dog in a neighboring yard through a picket fence, and the dog chomped down on his nose/top jaw. He has 4 holes in the top of his nose, one on the roof of his mouth, and a big cut on his right lip. :( I had to pry the other dog's mouth open to get him off of Gus, and the noise Gus was making was sooo terrible. I feel like such a bad mom, because I stopped watching them for like, 10 seconds! We went to ask if their dog was up-to-date on vaccinations. They were (thank goodness), but she didn't seem too concerned about the actual biting. She said "sorry", but it wasn't that heartfelt (or at least I didn't feel it was, but I'm a concerned mama). She said her dogs often run up and down the fences, barking. I should have told her that is a dominant/aggressive behavior, but I didn't. All I know is that I hope I never have to hear the sound that Gus was making ever again. It is seared into my memory forever.

Why do my dogs get attacked all the time???

P.S. from T & D's mom- did you report this to the dog officer or other authority? If their dog can bite poor Gus through that fence, others could be in danger.

Gus that is awful. I hope you heal up soon! Poor Gus!

Oh I am so sorry, your statement about that noise he was making made me want to cry. I know what you mean from one time when moose was attacked at the dog park. One of the owners in that case at least acted concerned but the other did not flinch and they stayed at the dog park. I hope he heals fast. Poor guy (or gus rather!)

Hell is that awful to hear. I sure hope he is on the mend fast. You could not have seen that one coming, and these things happen so fast!

Oh No! That's terrible! Poor Gus! I can't believe the other person didn't even offer a sincere apology! Unbelieveable!

We have a couple that own several Huskies in our area. One of them is very aggressive. He's attacked several dogs at our local dog park, yet they still keep coming. They have him muzzled once in a while, but I don't even think they should bring him into the park. I heard through the grape vine that the man that owns them is a police officer...you'd think he'd know better...whenever we go to the park and they show up, we just leave. Better safe than sorry. It sure doesn't seem right though.

Seems like its always the Sweet Boys like Gus who get hurt from some nasty aggressive dog. Gus, you heal up fast now and stay away from characters like the one who bit you.

Good thing that fence was there. Gus will be fine, and now he looks like a tough guy.

Seriously, most people are not so smart about doggie behavior and you just never know what you are going to run in to. So many dogs that never learned how to be safe with other dogs too so they act out in strange ways.

Not Gus's fault (or mom's).

Sounds like they need a different sort of fence around their yard. Hope Gus recovers quickly.

Hmmm... it strikes me that you should at least call the police and tell them about this. Maybe this woman should tie up her dog if he can't be trusted.

Poor, sweet Gus. Give him a smooch from this clan.

Hope Gus is feeling better soon.

Star had her face torn up by a cat recently. We were at a garden center and the cat ambushed her from behind some big plants while Star was sniffing around. I never even saw the cat; I thought the plants were attacking us. In the end, Star was bleeding all over her head and nose, and the cat stalked off with its head high.

But since the cat was on its own property (the cat belonged to the garden center), there wasn't much to do about it except move on. Unfortunately, now I'm going to have to do some extra desensitization work with Star around cats. She's decided that they are NOT her friends.

Most dogs are territorial by nature. They won't hesitate to attack an intruding dog that comes on their property. When Star and I go on walks in the neighborhood, I keep myself between her and any fences we pass. Many people have chain link fences, and their dogs come charging right up and scream bloody murder at us as we pass. I don't doubt they would bite whatever they could get through the fence if we were close enough. This goes for dogs of all sizes and types. But as long as the dogs are contained on their own property, there's no one to call about it. It's up to me to keep my dog away from the fence.

Awww poor Gus. I am so sorry to hear about this. I know first hand how terrifying it can be to watch, and the noise they make just breaks your heart. So glad the fence was there or it could have been worse. Thank god he is not seriously hurt.

Sending lots of hugs his way (and yours!).
